Concessionary Fares on the Tyne & Wear Metro

Several groups of passengers are entitled to reduced or free travel on the Tyne & Wear Metro. This guide explains who qualifies and how to apply for the right pass or card.

Last updated: 6 May 2026

The Concessionary Travel Schemes in Tyne and Wear provide reduced price travel to residents who are aged under 16, aged 66 or over, or who are disabled.

Under 16 Pop card — concessionary child fares

Children resident in Tyne and Wear can apply for an Under 16 Pop card, which entitles them to pay the concessionary child single fare of 60p on Metro. Children aged 5–15 without an Under 16 Pop card travel at the commercial child single fare of £1.00. You may be asked for proof of age.

To apply, you need:

  • proof of the child's age (passport or birth certificate)
  • proof that the child's permanent address is in Tyne and Wear (e.g. a parent or guardian's current Council Tax bill or utility bill dated within the last 6 months)
  • a £5 payment
  • a completed application form signed by the child's parent or guardian

Apply online at nexus.org.uk.

Under 5s — free travel

Children under 5 travel free on Metro. Up to three children aged 11 and under can also travel free all day, every day, when accompanied by a fare-paying adult.

Pop Blue — 16 to 21 year olds

If you are aged 16 to 21, Pop Blue gives you discounted fares on Metro: £1.00 for a single journey, or £2.20 for unlimited travel all day. The card itself is free but must be purchased with a minimum £5 balance. Get it online at nexus.org.uk. You may be asked for proof of age when travelling.

Concessionary Travel Pass — over 66s and disabled residents

Tyne and Wear residents aged 66 or over, or those with a qualifying disability, are entitled to an English National Concessionary Travel Pass (CT Pass). This allows free travel on local buses in Tyne and Wear from 9.30am Monday–Friday and all day at weekends and public holidays.

Note: a CT Pass alone does not entitle you to free or discounted travel on Metro. To travel on Metro with concessionary fares you need to purchase a Metro Gold Card in addition to your CT Pass.

Metro Gold Card

If you hold a CT Pass, you can buy a Metro Gold Card for £15 a year (Tyne and Wear residents) or £24 a year (residents from outside Tyne and Wear). This gives unlimited travel on Metro, the Shields Ferry, and Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland, valid at the same times as your CT Pass.

Off Peak CT Pass holders can travel from 9.30am Monday–Friday and all day at weekends and public holidays. All Day CT Pass holders can travel at any time.

You can buy a Metro Gold Card online at nexus.org.uk (Tyne and Wear CT Pass holders only) or at any Metro station ticket machine.
